GREENHEAD…GREEN BODY? Mutant mallard!

Frankenmallard

This all-green mallard was taken in Dermott, Ark.

This viral photo of a solid green Frankenmallard crossed our desk courtesy of biologist and WILDFOWL contributor Brad Fenson, who got it from an outfitter, who got it from a little bird flying around the Internets…this supermallard would be gorgeous to see glimmering on a lake in the sun and would make a cool mount, but the question remains, is it just a nasty hybrid-domestic/muscovy inbreed from the local park that got a “Call of the Wild” urge to fly with his wild brethren into shotgun range? Or could it be a legitimate high-flying mutant mallard of true wild-bird genetics?

We’ve all seen photos of those gorgeous solid black/green rooster pheasants, and mildly mutated black/duck mallard hybrids. And dark colors are genetically dominant. What do you think? Have you seen a quacker like this Christmas-y freak? The duck was allegedly killed in Dermott, Ark.

The pail yellow of the beaks leads me to believe it is a hybrid mallard, not in inbreed.

Ive gotta pet Cayuga duck in a pond.looks just like it but with a black beak.so im guessing its a farm duck breed with a wild mallard that maybe flew to where its parent was.this making it have the wild temptation of flying off.leading to its final day infront of some steel

seems like that fact is mallards will get it on with any duck that holds still long enough, yet on the other hand if it is a true mutation among wild birds that is a cool evolutionary part of nature that is to be respected.

I mounted a Mallard/Pintail Drake Hybrid I took near Bunkie, LA in January 2011. Its amazing when comparing it to both species because it has so many characteristics of both!!

Excellent, i look forward to one day finding a Canada Swan Goose ("swoose?") for the wall, or perhaps a long-tailed eider, lol

Gentlemen! Basic knowledge is, Mallard drakes will breed with each other, let alone other breeds. Living on a farm in MI, we have had cross breeds of multiple kinds with Mallards in our cattle ponds. They have no morals when it comes to breeding!
