There‘s nothing that helps a duck hunter step up their game like owning a boat. We waterfowlers love our toys, but buying a new call or a new jacket doesn’t open up a whole new world of available hunting opportunities. Going from a walk-in warrior to someone who can launch a boat and be to a new honey hole in just a short ride can mean the difference between a lifetime of fond memories of duck hunting, or giving up after a few years because you had too many poor hunts.

Either way, I’ve never met anyone who’s regretted buying a boat. I’ve also never met anyone who’s regretted upgrading that boat to something newer, that can get them even deeper into the marsh, or into those shallow pockets of water where the ducks just can’t seem to stay away. Let’s face it—you want a duck boat, and if you already have one, it’s probably time for a newer model. I know this because I’m right there with you, friend. So, let’s look at the best boats and motors for 2025, and imagine those early mornings, flying out in our new vessels to those secret spots that you can only reach with a good boat and solid motor.

Gator Trax Boats Marsh Series

Gator Trax Boats Marsh Series
Gator Trax Boats Marsh Series

The crew at Gator Trax understands that hunting for skittish ducks in bony backwaters requires a customized approach. And while their Marsh Series offers unique standard features, their builds allow for next-level unique features. The Marsh Series begins with boats of three different lengths, 14, 15, and 16 feet, and a beamy 50-inch bottom. The low-profile, 17-inch sides reduce hull weights so lower-horsepower mud motors can easily move a vessel fully loaded with hunters, gear, and dogs to remote spots. The one-piece hull design is made from a heavy-gauge .125 5086 marine grade alloy aluminum that is smooth and free of crimps. Rounded chines make poling over submersed deadfall and stumps easy. Long, sloping rakes quickly get boats on plane, while bow-to-stern braces add stability and flex. Gator Trax begins with standard features like nav lights, a grab bar, and an extreme LED stern light, Gator Boat brown paint, and custom builds take it from there.

Gator Tail Outboards Extreme Series 18’x 54”

The stepped chine design has improved the way the 18’ x 54” Extreme Series handles. Speeds are faster, rides are drier, and the boat takes sharp turns without any sliding. The one-piece hull is made from .125 thick 5086 aluminum with a .100 thick 5086 aluminum floor. Both the side and the transom heights are 24 inches. There is a front hatch with under-deck storage, a front seat pedestal base, and a rear driver’s stand-up grab bar. There are over a dozen other options that can be added for a customized design.

Go Devil 20’x 60” SD (Surface Drive)

Go Devil 20’x 60” SD (Surface Drive)
Go Devil 20’x 60” SD (Surface Drive)

If the way you hunt requires your boat to carry 1,200 pounds worth of hunters, dogs, and gear through long runs in skinny, marshy waters, then look to the Go Devil 20’ x 60” SD. The hull is made of a 5086-aluminum alloy, which is well known for its high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent corrosion resistance. Tapered chines provide stability at higher speeds, and easy maneuvering over submerged stumps and logs. Six stringers help distribute weight across the hull and reduce stress from movement. The 0.100 aluminum floor is treated with a non-skid coating to improve footing in standing water. The 20’x60” SD weighs 660 pounds and is best powered by a surface drive motors up to 50 horsepower. The aluminum transom is double angled, which offers improved handling, especially when running in reverse in an area full of stumps and deadfall. Push pole mounts, navigational lights, a handlebar, a battery pan, and fuel tank pan with hoses that run from the rear to the front of the boat are included.

Pro Drive 20’ x 54” X Series Timber Deck Edition

Pro Drive 20’ x 54” X Series Timber Deck Edition
Pro Drive 20’ x 54” X Series Timber Deck Edition

Based on timber hunters’ feedback, Pro Drive redesigned the rear entry step in their best-selling Timber Deck boat so that hunters have an easier time getting in and out of the boat. That change not only increases cockpit room, but it also makes for easier drain plug and bilge pump access. The hull is a custom-built marine-grade 5086 Aluminum that has extrusion welded ribs that run the entire length of the boat. To add strength, the bottom ribs, full floor, and side walls, 2” x 2” square tubing and 1” x 2” rectangular tubing are run every 10 inches. A flush, wall-to-wall design has a non-skid surface, and the TD Edition has a multi-position storage seat and an extended front deck that covers the gas tanks and trolling motor battery. Other benefits include a deck hatch that offers dry storage, a Max it Out LED Flexible Bow Light, grab bar receptacle, and more.

Backwater Inc. 1848 with 40HP swomp extra short longtail.

The crew at Backwater Inc. knows that if you want the true 4x4 of boat motors, there is no replacement for a longtail. They also know that the shorter the shaft, the easier it is to drive. That is why they built a hunt deck boat with an extra short transom, which allows them to build a 40HP longtail with a shaft length of only 55”. This extra short longtail has all the capabilities at surface drive length. Their 1848 boat also has a custom-built blind that hides well and also drops quickly and completely out of the way, and allows for easy operation of a mud motor or any outboard motor.

Epropulsion-X Series 40kW Electric Outboard Motor

Epropulsion-X Series 40kW Electric Outboard Motor
Epropulsion-X Series 40kW Electric Outboard Motor

It might take a minute to get used to talking about your outboard in kilowatts instead of horsepower, but you’ll get used to it. Epropulsion’s 40kW can push 2,270 pounds of two men in a 20-foot aluminum vee-hull at a full speed of 22 MPH and a half speed of 9.6 MPH. Battery life is dependent on speed, but you’ll get between 1 and 4 hours before a charge is needed. The 40kW is a motor that delivers zero emissions with 88% powertrain efficiency in a narrow footprint outboard that weighs 36% less than a comparably-sized gas motor. It’s an ultra-low noise, low vibration motor that is powered by a high-performance lithium iron phosphate battery that offers three times as much energy, 70% less weight than a lead battery, and has a 1C charging rating, which means full charge is achieved in one hour.
