Best New Waterfowl Shotguns for 2020

Best New Waterfowl Shotguns for 2020
Benelli B.E.S.T. Super Black Eagle 3

While there were a handful of new shotguns showcased at SHOT Show, there were also some subtle updates like Mossberg now offering a.410 pump and a .410 semi-auto shotgun in Mossy Oak Bottomlands camo, Remington offering the Versamax Sportsman in Mossy Oak Bottomlands and Realtree Edge camo, TriStar offering its Hunter Mag camo 3.5 over-and-under in Mossy Oak Bottomlands camo, and Winchester taking its impressive SX4 shotgun lineup and offering several 20-gauge versions of the popular shotgun this year.

Here’s the rest of what caught my eye in Vegas at the 2020 SHOT Show:

Benelli BE.S.T. Super Black Eagle 3

While Benelli’s flagship duck and goose gun, the Super Black Eagle 3, certainly isn't new this year, one new technology now available to SBE3 fans certainly is notable – the optional addition of the company's BE.S.T. (Benelli Surface Treatment) technology. Using diamond-like carbon particles, the multi-layers of the BE.S.T. technology creates an impenetrable armor that protects treated metal against abrasion and corrosion, even from extreme exposure to saltwater. MSRP $2,199 | benelliusa.com

Browning BPS Field Composite

Browning BPS Field Composite

New this year from the Utah gunmaker is the BPS Field Composite in Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Blades in both 12-gauge and 20-gauge versions. With 26- and 28-inch barrels available in each gauge, the scattergun features Browning’s top-tang safety, a receiver made from a solid block of forged steel, and the BPS’ reliable bottom load and ejection system. Add in a floating vent rib (to prevent point-of-impact shifts due to barrel heating), a reliable pump action, a larger trigger guard, the Invector-Plus Choke System, and an Inflex Recoil pad that can be trimmed by a gunsmith for the changing of length of pull, and the gun is a great bargain for waterfowlers searching for a reliable shotgun that doesn’t quit or break the bank. MSRP $779.99 | browning.com

CZ Drake All-Terrain Over-and-Under

CZ Drake All-Terrain Over-and-Under

CZ-USA’s current lineup features new side-by-sides and over-and-unders, all made for the modern upland bird hunter and waterfowler. That includes the company’s new All-Terrain Over-and-Under, a double-gun that features classic styling along with some revolutionary additions sure to make life easier in the field. The Drake version of the All-Terrain series features OD green Cerakote finishes on the 28-inch barrels and the receiver, a single extractor, a single selectable trigger, a Turkish walnut stock with a pistol grip, and five extended choke tubes. But what really sets this gun apart is the use of patent pending rare-earth magnets that help keep shotgun shells in place even when the gun is turned upside down. That make for easier shell loading in a pre-dawn goose pit blind or duck blind – you can literally load up this shotgun with the breech face pointing down! MSRP $791 | cz-usa.com

CZ 1012 Synthetic Bottomlands Semi-Auto

CZ 1012 Synthetic Bottomlands Semi-Auto

The new CZ 1012 Synthetic Bottomlands semi-auto 12-gauge – in Mossy Oak’s famed Bottomland pattern – delivers the need for minimal maintenance, ultra-reliability, and is capable of firing thousands of shells without so much as a muddy hiccup. Using a spring within the bolt to store energy during the shotgun's recoil, CZ-USA says the gas-less system uses this stored energy a split second later to rotate and unlock the twin lugs from the barrel extension. That results in kicking the spent shell out as the gun cycles another one into the chamber. MSRP $690 | cz-usa.com

Savage Renegauge

Savage Renegauge

You didn’t have to look far at the recent SHOT Show to see that one of the big new shotguns being introduced in 2020 was the Savage Renegauge. And for good reason, when you consider what’s on the outside of this brand-new shotgun. Offered in Mossy Oak’s Shadow Grass Blades camo, the gun features a synthetic stock and forend, a 28-inch barrel that is fluted, a red fiber-optic sight bead, flush mount chokes (improved, modified and full chokes come with the gun), oversized controls, an easy-to-use shell loading port, and a vent rib. But it’s what’s on the inside of this new Savage shotgun that really shines, starting with the D.R.I.V. (Dual Regulating Inline Valve) gas operating system. By shedding excess gas before the bolt is driven, the result is consistent ejection of magnum and low-brass shotshell loads, fast cycling of those shells, and less felt recoil on each shot. With the ability to use different recoil pads, cheek pads, and shims (all provided), each waterfowler can get a customized fit thanks to the ability to adjust the shotgun’s length of pull, comb height, and drop at heel. MSRP $1,549.99 | savagearms.com
