Mud motors are made to get waterfowl hunters anywhere they want to go.

Mud motors are made to get waterfowl hunters anywhere they want to go. The new surface-drive engines, when paired with shallow-running boats, can power through mud, stumps and just about any obstacle lurking in a marsh or swamp. And as good as these crafts and engines are at cutting through the slop, they prove seaworthy on large water, too. So check out the latest surface-drive mud motors. They'll get you anywhere you want to go, and then back home again.

Beavertail
Mud motors are made to get waterfowl hunters anywhere they want to go. The surface-drive models are made with a geometrically reinforced all-aluminum frame and drive housing to reduce weight and provide optimal power. They are offered in 27 hp Kohler, 35 hp Vanguard and 40 hp Kohler. Longtail models start with a 6 hp Kohler, and then jump to 13 hp, 20 hp, 24 hp, 27 hp and a 35 hp Vanguard model. Go-Devil
Are engineered to power through thick mud and nasty environments to get to where the ducks are hanging out. Surface Drive Engines feature a tough frame and high-performance drive train to add torque to the propeller. The company has improved its 35 hp Vanguard engine by changing fuel pumps, upgrading the muffler to stainless steel to resist rust and trimming down the weight of the flywheel. Electronic spark advance boosts horsepower and improves idling performance. A high-transom version is available for boats with 20-inch transoms.

Mud Buddy
Has been building belt-drive, short-tail mud motors for 10 years, and today, offers 85 models equipped to power any size duck boat. The company uses flat-drive frame technology — a combination of design and engineering that allows the prop to run more parallel to the water surface — to propel larger boats more efficiently. The Mini 35, with balanced frame design, is available with engines from 23 hp to 45 hp. The frame is easily maneuvered to traverse debris-filled waters. The new Hunter model, equipped with a light full-feature frame, also boasts engines from 23 hp to 45 hp. The motor is set back into the boat for less draft, is equipped with a simple manual trim and clutch and includes an extended outdrive. The HD Mini Sport comes in five motor selections from 9 hp to 27 hp. Its lightweight frame is designed for small boats, but the Mini Sport still packs the power to push a boat fast.

Pro-Drive
Has teamed up with Briggs & Stratton to deliver the Marine Series 36 Gross HP Vanguard V-Twin mud motor, built to run smooth and yet perform in harsh environments. Digital ignition allows the motor to run at a lower idle speed, aiding in decoy retrieval, docking and maneuvering in tight situations. Like all of its motors, the latest model is available with automatic full-power reverse. The touch of a rocker switch rotates the prop 180 degrees into the reverse position using a hydraulic cylinder and gear. Pro Drive continues to offer 27 HP Kohler models in both tiller and console steering models.

Gator-Tail
Makes the original belt-driven surface-drive mud motor and touts instant full-throttle reverse on its motors. The GTR 23 and GTR 35 models have maintenance-free belt drive systems, sealed lower units and power hydraulic trim. Both models offer a free-floating handle and squeeze-grip throttle so they can be operated while standing or sitting. The GTR 23 can push a boat up to 27 miles per hour, while the GTR 35 ramps up to 33 mph. Optional features include a sand and rock guard, trailering bracket, tall transom and custom camouflage treatment.
