With early season teal comes those high-pitched squeals that the hens pass off as “quacks.” A sound we all love to hear in those early morning marshes. While some hunters try to call teal on their regular duck calls, or simply hope the decoys will do the work for them, it’s most effective to be as realistic as possible. One of the ways to help your odds is to have a teal call that can help your trap sound like a content flock of rockets sitting in the marsh.

Here are WILDFOWL Magazine’s top 10 teal calls that will help you bag more birds as the early season rolls in.

Power Calls – Teal Call

Despite the lack of originality in the naming process of this call, it’s always a safe bet that any of Kelley Powers’ calls are going to perform. Whether it be a goose or teal call, their teal call incorporates a metal reed, allowing it to produce hyper-realistic teal noises without much effort. It’s easy to use, and it looks sharp too! Price: $40 (power-calls.com)

Duck Commander – Teal Hen Duck Call

Once again, the name of the call might be bland, but if there’s a man who knows every detail of how to call teal, it’s Phil Robertson. And this call is nothing if not perfect for teal hunters. It’s durable, easy to blow, sounds realistic as can be, and the price point allows you to buy five or six in case you have a lanyard malfunction. This is a call that the teal purists—we know you’re out there—need to own. You can even have it personally engraved for an extra $5. Price: $14 (duckcommander.com)

Buck Gardner – Teal Call

You might be noticing a trend with the names of these calls. Nevertheless, Buck Gardner made a polycarbonate killer. If one chooses to have it personally engraved, this call can have a metal band added. It’s no secret that Mr. Buck knows how to kill teal. And he’s made a top-tier call to keep them from just buzzing the tower, to committing in the decoys. With a hole in the insert, you can manually adjust the tone from high to low to match the sounds the birds want to hear with ease. Price: $17 (buckgardner.com)

Big Lake Outdoor Products – Tealwall

We’ve broken the trend! Big Lake Outdoor Products makes some fantastic calls on all fronts. From goose calls to custom-made whistles, they can fix you up with whatever you’re looking for. The Tealwall is a lethal tool around anyone’s neck that is designed to mimic both teal and gadwall. How awesome is that? I know plenty of guys that can be hunting teal and have a giant push of gaddies on the same hunt. This is the perfect piece. Not to mention it comes in some excellent acrylic colors to boot! Price: $35 (biglakeoutdoorproducts.com)

Beaver Creek Game Calls – Fast Food

The boys at Beaver Creek want people to know that this isn’t a teal whistle; this is a single reed call that produces a realistic quack of a hen teal. So when the birds are getting a little more wary and shy, this call still has the range and realism to keep their confidence and keep them screaming into range. A sharp-looking wood call, this one will keep the straps full as long as the teal keep hanging around. Price: $45 (beavercreekgamecalls.com)

Havoc Calls – Blue Rocket

This call is designed specifically for the blue-wing nut. Made to imitate those shrill, sharp quacks that they’re known for throughout the marsh. What sets this call apart is it doesn’t use a premade push-in reed set. They allow the hunter to adjust the call exactly how they want to fit their needs to make sure they match the perfect pitch and tone they want. Quite brilliant if you ask me. Price: $100 (havoccalls.com)

Sure-Shot – Teal Call

We couldn’t avoid the naming trend for too long, but luckily, the boys from Beaumont, Texas, offer a call that needs no fancy name. They dubbed it Teal Call, and that’s exactly what it does—calls teal; very well I might add. With the same look and style as the old Yentzen Original call, this is a big punch in a small package. At only 3.8”, this call might be small, like the birds it was designed to mimic, but that doesn’t stop it from bringing in wads of teal the moment they hear you wailing away on it. Price: $65 (sureshotgamecalls.com)

Haydel’s Calls – BT-85

Not mentioning the BT85 would be like making a list of the best baseball players ever and not mentioning Babe Ruth. The BT85 has been the demise of many a blue-wing since its release. You have to appreciate the simplicity of the call; plastic, a reed, and a logo that will likely wear off from how much you’ll use it. There’s nothing sexy about these calls, but boy do they work like a dream! They’re a teal hunter’s best friend, and a blue-wing’s worst nightmare! Price: $17 (haydels.com)

Haydel’s Calls – Big Blue BB-10

Once again on the list is another Haydel’s call—a double reed teal call, with a larger mouthpiece and exhaust for louder volume. Undoubtedly, Haydel’s knows how to make a good teal call, but these calls are designed to take it to the next level. This allows you to really reach out and catch the attention of those birds flying by who wouldn’t usually hear you. Now, you can call out and grab them. Just be ready because they’ll be coming in quick! Price: $21 (haydels.com)

Primos – Teal Duck Call

The last one on our list is sweet and simple but works like a charm—the Primos Teal Duck Call. An easy call to blow for beginners and veterans alike, this call is perfect for those days when the ducks need just a few notes to turn them your way. Or when they flutter overhead and need that one sweet note to make that last costly error to come into the decoys. Primos has made calls for decades now, and this call has been on the lanyards of many teal hunters who can attest to how well it works. Price: $14 (primos.com)
